What is Workplace Stress & Anxiety?

If you are reading this it may be because you are experiencing some form of anxiety or stress in the workplace. Unfortunately, workplace anxiety is a common experience and seeing as we spend a lot of our time at work it can have a significant impact on our physical, emotional and psychological wellbeing and work performance.


What causes workplace anxiety?


  • Job demands: a heavy workload, tight deadlines and giving presentations are just some of the demands a job can require
  • Job insecurity: fear of losing your job can be a major source of anxiety
  • Workplace culture:  a toxic or unsupportive workplace culture (i.e. bullying) can contribute to anxiety
  • Relationship with others: dealing with people’s personalities and communication styles including colleagues and bosses and their expectations especially if they are unclear and/or unrealistic
  • Performance reviews
  • Grievances
  • Inspections such as Ofsted Inspections
  • Physical work environment: an uncomfortable or unsafe work environment can contribute to anxiety

Here are some workplace stress statistics in Scotland


Prevalence

  • 80,000: An estimated 80,000 work-related stress, depression, or anxiety cases occur annually in Scotland. This represents a rate of 2,880 cases per 100,000 workers, in line with the UK average. (Source: Workplace health and safety statistics for Scotland, 2023)
  • 59%: Nearly 60% of new or long-standing work-related ill-health cases in Scotland involve stress, depression, or anxiety. (Source: Managing Health at Work Partnership Information Network (PIN) Guideline)


Impact

  • £1.9 billion: The overall cost of workplace injury and ill health in Scotland, including work-related stress, is estimated at £1.9 billion annually. (Source: Executive Summary of Workplace Safety Statistics in Scotland 2023)
  • 3.5 million days: An average of 3.5 million days are lost to work-related ill health annually in Scotland, with 2 million attributed to stress, depression, or anxiety. (Source: Workplace health and safety statistics for Scotland, 2023)


Additional notes

  • While the data doesn't specify industry breakdowns, there are indications that certain sectors experience higher stress levels, such as healthcare and social services
  • The COVID-19 pandemic has likely exacerbated workplace stress due to additional pressures and uncertainties
