What are Emotional Health & Wellbeing?

Emotional health and wellbeing go hand-in-hand, encompassing how we experience, manage, and express our emotions, and how well we cope with life's ups and downs. It's about having the skills, resources and resilience to navigate unhelpful and uncomfortable emotions and challenges, build healthy relationships, and find meaning and purpose in life.

What are the key aspects of emotional health?

  • Awareness: Understanding, acknowledging and being able to clarify and verbalise your emotions, both the uncomfortable and unhelpful ones plus helpful and comfortable ones
  • Regulation: Effectively managing your emotions in a healthy way, even when they're difficult by having skills and tools in place
  • Expression: Feeling comfortable and safe expressing your emotions in appropriate ways to caring and safe people
  • Resilience: Being able to bounce back from setbacks and challenges
  • Positive and realistic outlook: Maintaining a realistic, hopeful and optimistic attitude toward life

What are the key aspects of wellbeing?

  • Meaning and purpose: Having a sense of direction and significance in life
  • Healthy relationships: Strong, supportive connections with others
  • Physical health: Taking care of your body through healthy habits like exercise, nutrition, and sleep
  • Mental health: Managing stress, anxiety and other mental health concerns effectively with skills and tools
  • Personal growth: learning and expanding your knowledge and skills and learning from mistakes and challenges

Emotional health and wellbeing statistics in Scotland

The emotional health and wellbeing of Scotland's population is a complex and multifaceted issue, influenced by a range of factors. Here are some key statistics to consider:

Overall Mental Wellbeing

  • Decline in 2022: The average level of mental wellbeing in Scotland, as measured by the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS), decreased in 2022 to 47.0, down from 48.6 in 2021 and outside the range observed between 2008 and 2019 (49.4-50.0). This suggests a worsening of overall mental health across the population.
  • Disparities by Age: Older adults tend to report higher WEMWBS scores compared to younger adults. In 2022, adults aged 65-74 reported a mean score of 49.8, while those aged 75 or older had a score of 49.3. Conversely, the mean scores for those aged 16-64 ranged from 45.5 to 47.1.
  • Deprivation and Mental Health: There is a clear link between deprivation and mental health. In 2022, WEMWBS scores decreased as levels of deprivation increased. This suggests that people living in more deprived areas are more likely to experience mental health problems.

Just like life and our physical health, taking care of our emotional health and wellbeing is a journey, not a destination. There will be ups and downs along the way, but by developing healthy habits and seeking support when needed, you can cultivate a thriving and fulfilling life – a Discerning Life.

'I am a middle aged woman, I initially consulted Paula for anxiety symptoms during public speaking; my overall goal was to feel more serene and less anxious about the “small things” in my life. Of course, the journey of self discovery is never as simple as this however it was very rewarding. Paula outlined up front how long she thought we would need to work together, this gave me confidence that there was light at the end of the tunnel, we had a goal and I was not going to have years of therapy!

There were many “light bulb” moments during my journey with Paula, she is compassionate, warm, giving and non judgmental. For me to understand, how we as humans process thoughts and emotions was very enlightening. This understanding brings me calmness that halts that emotional spiral and frantic thoughts that can use up a lot of energy and usually is unproductive.

After my sessions with Paula, which I enjoyed immensely, I achieved more in this time than any other time that I have invested in my mental and emotional health. I am not as hard on myself and do not allow other people in my life to project onto me their issues. I feel I am now more equipped to handle difficult and confronting situations and I can work through and process my reaction and emotions. I feel more in control both physically and mentally.

My journey of self discovery and understanding why I emotionally reacted to certain situations was enlightening. Paula gave me the ability to better understand myself and the confidence not to take things personally and the tools to cope with public speaking.

Your journey with Paula will be fulfilling, the angst that can come with sorting through our “luggage” is worth it in so many ways. To gain an understanding of who we are and how we can invest in improving our mental and emotional health is priceless.
It is said “It is the journey not the destination”, your journey with Paula will be enriching on so many levels. I feel very blessed that I had the opportunity to share my journey with Paula.' Clare (Dundee)

'The process of Hypnotherapy has enabled me to put aside my conscious thoughts and judgements to find my true self, my innocent heart that is full of hope and joy, that had been silenced for such a long time. Paula helped me to better understand what the emotional needs were that I had tried meeting by filling my life with achievements and success that did not, at the end of the day, bring me the peace and joy that I desired. 'I saw that I had never learned how to enjoy my life, only how to achieve. All my life, I had been busy seeking happiness, but not finding it' Dan Millmann, The Way of the Peaceful Warrior. Paula has shown me how to meet my own emotional needs, using the tools that I already had inside me. My hurt, anger and fury were transformed into clarity, trust and strength – this is true alchemy. There are really no words to describe the fundamental change to my life since working with Paula. I have started to understand myself, my emotional responses and my behaviour, and this growing clarity has started a healing process with myself and loved ones. I see for myself a future of joy and love, in which all my desires can be fulfilled; a life of abundance.' Melissa

‘I came to see Paula a few years ago and particularly through what has been a challenging period for me. I was unsure how a psychotherapist was going to help but she has made an amazing difference in allowing me to reframe some of the emotional issues in my life which contributed to stress and anxiety. The process allowed me to discover and learn a lot about my own behaviour, what things made me feel trapped and how I could learn and change my behaviour and emotional response to certain family relationships which have caused me issues during my life. It was not easy, probably one of the hardest things I've ever done, but also the most liberating experience I've ever had. I can't thank her enough for her help and support in showing me how to make the changes I needed to do. I've never felt more confident and content.’ Rory (Angus)
