Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy in Sports Performance & Physical tests: Seeking the Mental Edge

Both Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy have found their way into the realm of sports performance, aiming to help athletes unlock their full potential by addressing mental barriers and optimising their mindset. While they differ in approach, they share the goal of enhancing focus, managing stress, and building confidence.

Hypnotherapy in Sports

A core principle of life is ‘what you focus on you amplify’ and this is true in the realm of sports performance too. The internally focused and absorbed state of hypnosis allows athletes to select what they place in their focus to assist top level performance. Learning Self Hypnosis (incorporating visualisation and helpful self talk) also allows athletes to ‘mentally rehearse’ their sport, therefore priming for a successful performance. Hypnosis also allows for compartmentalisation before a race or game, allowing an athlete to tune out external factors and tune into an internally focused, calm state. These skills can create a mental blueprint for success and sharpen focus, boost confidence, reduce anxiety and promote optimal performance levels during competitions.

Other potential benefits of the use of Hypnotherapy in sports are

  • improved motivation
  • development of helpful self talk
  • stress management
  • reduced anxiety
  • enhanced focus
  • faster mental recovery
  • faster physical and injury recovery
  • pain management

Psychotherapy in Sports

While Hypnotherapy often focuses on specific performance-related concerns, Psychotherapy can delve into broader underlying issues like fear of failure, perfectionism or past traumas that might be impacting performance. It often makes use of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), helping athletes identify and challenge negative thought patterns and develop coping mechanisms for stress and anxiety. Hypnosis can also be used here to allow athletes to take in these new ideas and perspectives in a focused state allowing for automaticity to develop.

Other potential benefits of the use of Psychotherapy in sports are

  • improved emotional regulation
  • enhanced self-awareness
  • development of coping skills
  • increased resilience
  • building a healthy association with sports

Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy can also be used in the preparation and execution of Physical Tests such as the beep test (required by the Police, Emergency and Military organisations) and the Helicopter Rescue Test required for people working off shore.

Some insight into the landscape of therapy in sport

  • Growing recognition: The British Psychological Society (BPS) acknowledges the increasing use of psychological support in sports, including techniques like hypnotherapy. This suggests potential growth in their application.
  • Anecdotal evidence: Articles and interviews with athletes and professionals highlight the increasing use of hypnotherapy and psychotherapy in sports to address performance anxiety, injury recovery and mental wellbeing.

If you are wanting to improve your sports performance or looking for help to prepare for a physical test then please reach out. In sessions, I will guide you through the process of how to improve your focus so you can achieve your sporting ambitions.
