Life Transitions.....we all have them

Life transitions are significant changes that happen in our lives, marking the beginning of something new. They can be both exciting and challenging, bringing a mix of emotions and demanding adjustments. We all experience them differently and in a personal way, of course.

Here are some common life transitions we experience

Personal transitions

  • Childhood to adulthood: this transition involves physical and emotional changes, increased independence and exploration of identity as well as shifts from school levels to college, university or work (see Working with Teens)
  • Emerging adulthood: this period, roughly between 18 and 25, involve establishing independence, making career choices and forming relationships
  • Midlife: this transition, often around the 40s or 50s, can involve re-evaluating life goals, priorities and relationships
  • Retirement: this transition marks the end of full-time work and brings new opportunities for leisure, travel and personal pursuits as well as concerns around finances and wellbeing and health

Relationship transitions

  • Starting a romantic relationship: this involves getting to know someone new, navigating intimacy and potentially making a commitment
  • Moving in together/getting married: these transitions bring changes to finances, living arrangements and family dynamics
  • Separating/getting divorced: these also bring changes to finances, living arrangements and family dynamics marking the end of a relationship
  • Becoming a parent: this period can bring immense joy and responsibility as well as stress and new anxieties for some, requiring adjustments to lifestyle, identity and coping strategies
  • Empty nest: this transition occurs when children leave home, bringing changes to family dynamics and potentially a renewed focus on other aspects of life

Professional transitions

  • Starting a new job: this involves learning new skills, adapting to a new workplace culture and building relationships with colleagues
  • Getting promoted: this change can bring increased responsibility, workload and potentially new challenges and opportunities as well as workplace stress and anxiety
  • Career change/becoming self employed: this transition involves exploring new interests, acquiring new skills and potentially starting from scratch in a new field (see Working with Business)
  • Retirement: as mentioned earlier, this time in life marks the end of full-time work and brings both new opportunities and concerns

Other transitions

  • Moving to a new home: this change involves adapting to a new environment, building new relationships and potentially experiencing a culture change. Moving house is often cited as one of the top stressors in life.
  • Loss of a loved one: this life event brings immense grief and requires time and support for healing (see Grief & Loss)
  • Major illness or disability: this  can be life-altering, requiring adjustments to physical and emotional health and wellbeing and potentially impacting daily life

Some transitions we know are coming or we are aware are happening, they may be planned and anticipated too. Others can creep up on us, blind side us and be unexpected and challenging. The important thing is to be aware of the potential impact of transitions and to seek support when needed.

If you are about to experience a life transition or are in the middle of one and are looking for help and support, please reach out to me. In sessions I will guide you through the process of how to navigate through the experience so you can move from coping to thriving, be equipped to live a life you feel good about and create a future you are inspired by.

Sessions are available in person and online.

Client Success Stories

'When I walked through Paula’s rooms, I was going through a separation and the loss of two family members. I didn’t know what to expect! But with Paula’s caring nature, she gave me the tools to recognise and cope as I went through the stages of disbelief and shock, to anger and ultimately grief. She provided me with a safe haven and made me see things that I would not normally have been willing to see, accept or understand. I now feel stronger than I ever have. I have confidence in my beliefs, my decisions and myself. Thank you Paula.' Mia

‘Paula provides a safe, professional haven to her clients in moments of crisis and personal loss. I would strongly recommend her to anyone looking for a skilled, compassionate and empathetic psychotherapist.’ Lesley (Perth)

'I just wanted to reach out and give you a huge thank you. You were working with my son just before lockdown and I just wanted to give you an update. It’s no exaggeration to say you changed his life. Before working with you he could hardly leave the house, couldn’t go to school and couldn’t eat outside the house. He’s now in his second year of a Law Degree having got A’s in all his school exams, he ended up with 9 Highers all at A grade. It’s so nice to see him enjoy life! Thank you so much, you genuinely changed his life.' P.A. (Dundee)

‘I can't put into words just how amazing this lady is. Paula has helped me on the most incredibly difficult journey with such a compassionate and empathetic approach. She is the most genuine, caring person and her knowledge and skill in both psychotherapy and hypnotherapy is incomparable. Paula instantly makes you feel at ease, she never judges and always helps you find the answers you need. She gave me the strength and courage to get to where I am today. I am in a much better place and feel like a different person thanks to her invaluable help and support. Thank you so much Paula.’ Heather (Dundee)
